Dynamite to Produce a Spider: Master of Men Series

Woah, woah, WOAH!  What..?  I don’t know how I missed that tidbit of information but I am excited and a little concerned.  At first, but more on that later.

The SPIDER by Moonstone

Traditional

Moonstone currently holds the license to the Spider comic books but with a mutual agreement between them, Dynamite and the licensor, Dynamite is able to create a mini-series of their own.  Moonstone will still be putting out new material of their own in comic and prose form.  Read the press release from Dynamite here.

With the creative team behind the book I have high hopes that it’s not going to turn out as poorly as The Last Phantom.  That’s for another blog post.

The book will be written by David Liss, author of Marvel’s pulp themed Mystery Men series and drawn by Colton Worley.  From what I have seen of the sneak preview, Colton has done an absolutely amazing job on the art!

The Spider

Not so traditional ('Laser Webbing'?)

One notable difference between Dynamite’s and Moonstone’s version is the way they are drawing the Spider.  Moonstone portrays him as written in the pulps with the fright wig and fangs.  Dynamite will draw him as he was seen in the 1938 and 1941 serials starring Warren Hull, wearing a cape and cowl with a web design on it.  This was the source of my concern.  I’m not a Spider purist in any form.  My first introduction to him was through the Eclipse Comics series written by Tim Truman and drawn by Enrique Alcatena.  I liked it enough to seek out some of the original pulp stories and enjoy more of his adventures that way.  My problem with the movie serial version was it is so damn goofy looking but after visiting artist Corton Worley’s blog post showing a couple pages of the art, all my concerns have been laid to rest.  The Spider looks great!

Bad ass!
